Rite of Spring, Right Whales Return to Vineyard Waters

Last week, a group of North Atlantic right whales was spotted during an aerial survey running from south of Nantucket heading west to the waters south of Rhode Island. A large aggregation of right whales was spotted on both March 13, just southwest and southeast of Aquinnah, and one right whale was spotted on March 16 due south of Squibnocket.

Standing Tall Through Near Record Snowfall

Boston celebrated (or bemoaned) a record amount of snow this year. And while the Vineyard hasn’t broken the record snowfall of 67 inches in 2005, it has come close at 52.8 inches, as measured at the Edgartown cooperative weather station. This is more than twice the Island’s average snowfall amount.

High School Sees Big Turnout for Portuguese Language Classes

For the more than 60 students in the newly revived Portuguese program at the regional high school, falar portugues (speaking Portuguese) is becoming easier. Portuguese joins French, Spanish and German as languages offered by the high school. But German, the program with the lowest enrollment, is being phased out.

Tisbury Selectmen Institute New Harbor Regulations

Tisbury selectmen approved a host of new harbor regulations covering everything from dinghy length to docking time limits during their Tuesday meeting. They also set new rates for mooring fees, which will increase by five per cent across the board for commercial, town lease, and private moorings, beginning with the current billing cycle.

In light of persistent traffic problems in downtown Vineyard Haven, the town is asking the Steamship Authority to look at alternative sites for the Island’s main ferry terminal. The Steamship Authority has agreed to look into the issue but has not committed to a study.

After Debate, Oak Bluffs Lets New Business Hook Up to Sewer

After heated deliberations Thursday afternoon, the town of Oak Bluffs will allow developers of a new bowling alley to hook up to the town sewer. The wastewater commission voted 2-1 to extend sewer lines to Uncas avenue, a street that was not approved for sewering.

Kathryn B. Stewart, 90

Kathryn B. Stewart of Vineyard Haven died on Friday, March 20 at the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital. She was 90.

She was predeceased by her husband, A. Douglas Stewart in March of 2005 and is survived by her two daughters, Carolee Stewart and Barbara Lopes.

Visiting hours in the Chapman, Cole and Gleason Funeral Home, Edgartown Road, Oak Bluffs will be held on Monday, March 23 from 6 to 8 p.m. Her funeral service will be held at the First Baptist Church, Spring street, Vineyard Haven on Tuesday, March 24 at 2 p.m. with burial to follow in the Oak Grove Cemetery.

Donations may be made in her memory to the First Baptist Church, PO Box 806 or to the Island Community Chorus, PO Box 4157, both in Vineyard Haven, MA 02568.
